The avocado. The first time I ever saw this piece of fruit was when I was travelling Guatemala 25 years ago. My sister and I were in a cafe and wanted to eat something. We read ‘Hamburguesa con guacemole’. As we had never ever heard of guacemole, the word ‘hamburguesa’ sounded a little like the hamburgers we knew. So we played safe and ordered it. I can remember I did not really like the creamy green stuff called guacemole.
Years later the avocado came to the Netherlands as there were more and more Mexican Restaurants popping up. Guacemole was now one of the most famous spreads and was eaten by may people alongside the nachos. I myself started to really like this ‘creamy green stuff’ and prepared is as often as possible. Now you can even wake me up to eat the avocado! I love it.
From the outside it does not look very appealing. But it is a beautiful piece of fruit. Here in the Netherlands we know the smaller shaped ones. The ones with dark green, even brown skin. When I was in South America and the Caribbeans they had the size of a melon with a light green skin. The fruit itself is supposed to be silky, smooth, light green, maybe yellowish.
The avocado has many health benefits and contains the correct fats, fibers and is low in sugars. It is also a great source of Vitamines: B1, B2, B6, B11, C, E and minerals: potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc. All of this in only one piece of fruit. Can you imagine!
The pit in the middle of the fruit is even more healthy. It helps to regulate the cholesterol, the appear to be very effective in reducing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and fighting diarrhea. They strengthen the immune system and there are many more benefits. For me it works best to take of its skin and grind it so it will become a light pink powder which is great in a smoothie or in a salad. Delicious!
So there you see, every part of this tiny fruit can be eaten is is stuffed with great health benefits. You can use the avocado in your salad, as mane part of the smoothie, the base of a (finger licking) chocolate mousse, guacemole. It can be used as a batter for your brownies and many many more.
